Along with straightening your tresses, your go-to styling tool may soon be doing a whole lot more. According to The Daily Mail, engineers at the University of New Mexico and Los Alamos National Laboratories are testing out flat iron-like devices that can color your mane without harsh chemicals or spending hours at the salon.

Using focused ion beams, researchers were able to change the hue of specific strands and etch in patterns, too. And after trying the technique on different shades of hair (see the blonde tester above applying bright pink), researchers found that it worked best on brunettes, which is great for brown-haired ladies who want new colors without using bleach.
