A woman admitted to hospital to have her ovaries removed stunned doctors when she gave birth to a baby boy.
Rebecca Oldman was 32-weeks pregnant when she delivered her son James but had no idea she was expecting after medical officials missed the diagnosis. Instead the 25-year-old was advised she would need to undergo an operation to have her ovaries removed.
She had been suffering from painful cramps and after three scans, two blood tests and three pregnancy tests it was determined the procedure was required. However, staff at Middlemore Hospital in Manukau City, New Zealand woke Mrs Oldman up during the op to tell her she was with child afterall.
Mrs Oldman said: "I was facing not being able to have any more children because they thought there were problems with my ovaries and all of a sudden we had a son. "Even though it was short notice it was better than waking up and being handed a baby."
Baby James was delivered by caesarean shortly after his mum was made aware he existed. It is thought her symptoms were being caused by the infant being lodged tightly along her back. Doctors are now investigating how the pregnancy was missed.
