Treasure hunters are searching for a £12,000 diamond that plunged to Earth after a London jewellery company sent it into space.
Bosses at 77 Diamonds attached the 1.13 carat sparkler to a helium balloon and launched it into the skies above Derbyshire.Treasure hunters are searching for a £12,000 diamond that plunged to Earth after a London jewellery company sent it into space.
The floating precious stone was tracked by GPS technology after rising to a height of 20km above the earth before the balloon burst and its precious cargo descended to Earth.
This sparked a scramble to find the gem as the company revealed it now resides within a five-mile radius of the village of Lea, Lincolnshire.

Co-founder of 77 Diamonds, Tobias Kormind, said: "Whoever finds our diamond really does get to keep it, so we are encouraging the general public to go out and start searching for it."
The company say eager stone-searchers heading for the village, which is near Gainsborough, should watch out for a 'popped white balloon and a bright orange parachute attached to a red and silver box'.
The resultant hunt has caused much excitement on Twitter among those dreaming of an uncovering the diamond and having a a lucrative 'jewel' of a day.
